The euro crisis is fracturing Europe, revealing a troubling trend where the foundations of European democracy are being undermined. The euro crisis has elevated Chancellor Angela Merkel to an informal leadership role, reflecting a new power dynamic between creditor and debtor nations. This situation is underpinned by a form of ‘German euro nationalism,’ which is shaping the continent's identity. The current European model, based on fear of chaos, is unsustainable. For the EU to thrive, it must evolve into a more positive entity, built on a vision of grassroots engagement and the active participation of citizens across Europe.
