The title of the book takes its name from the charge the playwright and his partner were tried and found guilty of in 1962. Malicious Damage focuses on the earlier part of Orton and Halliwell's life together, looking at their relationship and their shared creative practice. Particularly in reference to the stolen Islington library books they cut up and re-collaged over the course of 3 years from 1959-62. It was this act that earned the pair six month prison sentences.
