Theodor Mommsen (1817–1903) was a prominent figure in 19th-century Germany, influencing science, politics, and public life. His image significantly contributed to the evolution of visual media, which continues to be relevant today. This study investigates the core collection of images associated with Mommsen, including daguerreotypes, photographs, xylographs, portrait drawings, prints, caricatures, portrait paintings, busts, statuettes, medals, plaques, postcards, illustrated reports, satirical magazine illustrations, collectible advertisements, stamps, commemorative plaques, and monuments. It also includes contemporary descriptions of how he was perceived and evaluations of specific artworks by Mommsen, his family, and others. The images and texts analyzed here provide a vital and previously underexplored resource for understanding Mommsen’s biography.
