In the 1920s, Frankfurt am Main embarked on an ambitious architectural and cultural renewal program known as the New Frankfurt. Spearheaded by Lord Mayor Ludwig Landmann and chief municipal planning officer Ernst May, this initiative aimed to implement the principles of the Modern Movement. Over 10,000 new residential units were planned starting in 1925, with architects from various backgrounds contributing to the project.
