Röttingen, located in the picturesque Taubertal, is a medieval fortified town 35 kilometers south of Würzburg, surrounded by 14th and 15th-century city walls. Its historical old town, characterized by seven preserved towers, features a unique street structure with gabled half-timbered houses lining the main street and marketplace, alongside looser developments that include former stables and barns. Like many rural communities, Röttingen faces challenges of migration and vacancy, particularly affecting over 40 individual monuments and former agricultural buildings. Since 2002, various urban development programs have aimed to revitalize the area, resulting in projects such as the redesign of the marketplace, the restoration of the baroque town hall, and the transformation of a neighboring half-timbered house into the residential and guesthouse "Röttinger Bürgerstube." A significant aspect of the town's development is Burg Brattenstein, a compact four-sided castle that marks the southwestern edge of the old town, with construction completed between August 2017 and May 2018, designed by Schlicht Lamprecht Architekten BDA.
