The author, born in 1866, is best known for creating A. J. Raffles, a gentleman thief, whose adventures captivated readers in the late 19th century. His experiences in Australia and service during WWI deeply influenced his writing. In 1919, he published "Notes of a Camp-Follower on the Western Front," reflecting on his harrowing experiences during the war, especially after the loss of his son at Ypres.
