The development of West Roxbury, originally known as Westerly, is traced from its Puritan settlement in 1630 through its transformation into an independent town in 1851. The establishment of Brook Farm in 1840, a transcendental community, marked a significant moment in its history. The arrival of the Boston and Providence Railroad spurred a building boom that reshaped the landscape, replacing farms with new streets and homes. This narrative is illustrated through vintage images from the West Roxbury Historical Society and contemporary photographs by Charlie Rosenberg.
