The biography details the life of John Payne, a prominent translator known for his work on Boccaccio's Decameron, The Arabian Nights, and the poetry of Omar Khayyam, François Villon, and Diwan Hafez. He viewed Hafez as a literary equal to Dante and Shakespeare, praising his profound insights into human experience. In addition to his translations, Payne was involved in limited edition publishing and the Villon Society, which celebrated the works of the medieval poet François Villon. He passed away in 1916 at the age of 73.
