Originating outside Jerusalem, the Order of Saint Lazarus was founded to care for leprosy victims and evolved into a Crusader Monastic Order after the First Crusade in 1099. Early administrative details are scarce, but it was overseen by a maistre under the Latin Patriarch. A significant manuscript Rule Book from the early fourteenth century, located at a Benedictine Nunnery in Switzerland, provides insights into the order's regulations, including sections from the twelfth century and later local management rules established in the early 15th century.
