People’s transnational mobilities and efforts to establish homes in their countries of residence have led to complex identities tied to various communities within different political contexts. Migrants and their descendants work to forge and reshape connections with both their country of origin and their new homes. Those with Indian roots living abroad exemplify this phenomenon, as they create vibrant global communities that challenge traditional notions of Indian diasporas. Belonging for these individuals encompasses membership not only in their nations of residence and origin but also in diverse networks across political, economic, religious, and social spheres at various levels. However, this sense of belonging is often fraught with ambiguity, as it involves navigating dilemmas of inclusion and exclusion. The contributions in this volume address the challenges faced by members of Indian communities abroad regarding their identities and participation in specific groups. The essays collectively argue that these individuals develop strategies to manage the complexities of their belonging amid distinct power dynamics. Ultimately, the work illuminates how dilemmas of belonging are negotiated within intercultural contexts.
