Describes some of the concepts underlying the Chinese language and writing system, and gives the author's position on a number of ideas about the language.

This text presents dialogues on everyday topics together with analysis of anticipated points of difficulty for the student and numerous sentences illustrating the usage of all new words and grammar. Sie befasst sich in populärwisschenschaftlicher Weise mit der chinesischen Sprache und Schrift, insbesondere dem Aufbau und der Funktionsweise chinesischer Schriftzeichen. DeFrancis widerlegt überzeugend verbreitete Vorurteile, z. B. dass die chinesische Schrift ideographisch sei. Er gibt außerdem einen historischen Überblick über Versuche, die Schrift durch Einführung verschiedener alphabetischer Transkriptionssysteme zu reformieren.
