Multiscale and Multiphysics Flow Simulations of Using the Boltzmann Equation

Applications to Porous Media and MEMS

      • 176pagine
      • 7 ore di lettura

Focusing on kinetic theory, this book offers an in-depth exploration of flow problems across molecular, hydrodynamic, and Darcy scales. It presents a variety of numerical algorithms designed to address the same Boltzmann-like equation, tailored to different applications where transport mechanisms vary significantly. The author’s approach bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and practical applications, making it a valuable resource for understanding complex fluid dynamics.

      Functional hydrogels as biomaterials

      • 163pagine
      • 6 ore di lettura

This book introduces readers to the latest advances in hydrogel biomaterials, mainly focusing on the emerging areas of synthetic and biopolymer hydrogels formed through specially designed chemical or physical crosslinking, and the cyclodextrin-based host-guest supramolecular self-assembly, for cell encapsulation, cell expansion, cell differentiation and tissue repair, stem cell culture, and cellular therapy and drug delivery applications. The book was written by experts at the forefront of these interdisciplinary areas and is intended for all researchers working in the fields of biomaterials and biomedical engineering, as well as medical professions. Jun Li is a Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore. Yoshihito Osada is a Professor at RIKEN Advanced Science Institute, Japan. Justin Cooper-White is a Professor at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, University of Queensland, Australia.

Focusing on China's teacher education policy since the 1990s, this volume employs a case study method and a Multiperspectival Approach to reveal the intricate implementation processes at the institutional level. It examines the sociopolitical and cultural challenges posed by globalization, highlights national initiatives for developing qualified teachers, and analyzes new teacher identities amid rising professionalism. The findings from a provincial normal university illustrate the complexities of policy flow and institutional barriers, leading to recommendations and a proposed Zhong-Yong Model for broader educational policy applications.

The aim of this dissertation is to explore how humans integrate the information from different movement contexts (e. g. the non-target object in the workspace, human bimanual movement and the joint action) in order to plan and execute a prehensile movement. It deals with the following questions. First, which strategy do humans use to adjust to an increase in obstacle height and how do humans use the wrist joint to avoid a conflict between the body and an obstacle? Second, how do humans adjust their kinematics, when they switch from unimanual movement to bimanual movement and how do humans control the joints of their arms when they increase speed in a bimanual movement? Third, how do humans predict and understand another person’s action in a sequential transferring task and how do humans integrate the common task goal and the individual task goal? Does movement speed affect the integration of both goals? The experimental results offer some possible explanations for human behaviour in the different movement contexts and suggest further studies of the underlying neuronal mechanisms. The analysis of the data can also be used to establish some intelligent algorithms that could improve robotic control.

The study explores China's outward foreign direct investment (OFDI) by distinguishing between push and pull factors. Utilizing panel OLS for pull factors and co-integration methods for push factors, it finds that Asian exports of fundamental products and GDP per person employed positively correlate with OFDI, while regulatory quality negatively impacts it. Key push factors include positive influences from foreign reserves, exchange rates, patents, and wages, while exports and savings rates show negative associations. The analysis highlights the significant role of Chinese policies in boosting OFDI since 2000.

The school-to-work transition has been an important topic in the fields of education and sociology research in the past few years. Pre-vocational education, which takes place during lower-secondary school and aims to facilitate the school-to-work transition, is of critical significance in introducing the participants to the world of work and/or in preparing them for entry into further vocational education programs. With a strong comparative nature, Jun Li presents this systematic investigation of the pre-vocational education in Germany and China and analyzes their curricula of pre-vocational education. By combining the methods of content analysis and teacher interview, the author offers an in-depth perspective into the realms of pre-vocational education and reveals the divergences between the prescribed curriculum and the enacted curriculum. The findings also relate closely to an intensively discussed issue in the sociology of education in the past few years, namely the issue of knowledge and its status, function and forms in the school education today.
