Das vorliegende Werk ist ein Lehrbuch zur Mathematik-Olympiade für Anfänger. Das Besondere an der Mathe-Olympiade ist, dass man nicht eingelernte Schemata (wie im Pflichtschulunterricht) anwendet, sondern eigenständig Lösungsstrategien entwickelt. Ohne Geistesblitz oder eine ausgeklügelte Idee kommt man bei einer schwierigen Angabe selten zum Ziel. Das Buch versucht trotzdem die Gratwanderung zwischen „Techniken einlernen“ und „Kreativität entwickeln“, denn ohne Zweifel braucht der Mathematik-Olympionike zahlreiche „handwerkliche“ Techniken und die Kenntnisse mathematischer Sätze.
