The Animal Side is a manifesto on the importance of animals for human thought. It attempts to characterize the importance, for human beings, of the fact that animals exist. Adopting a philosophical and poetic approach, the book seeks to show that animals' ways of inhabiting the earth are, for human consciousness, an expansion and an exploration of what philosophers and poets have tried to name by speaking of the Open. Beginning with the story of an encounter with a deer on a road at night, the book proceeds by showing that, beyond the diversity of animal life and the ways animals differ from human beings, there is a "layer of the perceptible" on which we all draw, humans and animals alike, in our own ways. At present, however, this layer itself is at risk. Thus the book can also be read as a defense and illustration of animals' modes of being, and as a plea for their survival.

« Mai 68 fut une convergence, c'est comme si des milliers de petites rigoles avaient abouti au même point, formant un lac d'impatience qui ne pouvait que déborder. »En 2004, à la suite de la publication de Tuiles détachées qui était un récit autobiographique, Jean-Christophe Bailly avait commencé la rédaction d'un texte personnel sur les événements de mai 68 qu'il n'avait pas achevé alors. Il le reprend aujourd'hui, en ajoutant des notes, des précisions et une postface.On ne trouvera pas dans ce texte les réunions syndicales étudiantes, ni les AG dans les amphithéâtres, ni les bagarres, ni les distributions de tracts devant les usines, ni le calendrier précis des événements. Jean-Christophe Bailly nous propose plutôt un récit personnel presque à demi-rêvé, des images resurgies de sa mémoire, cinquante ans après : le regard d'un jeune étudiant de Nanterre, auteur en devenir, sur ces événements qui ont marqué la France, où à la fois spectateur et acteur, à la fois engagé mais peinant à entrer pleinement dans les mouvements politiques, comme si son âme foncièrement indépendante et libre s'opposait à la discipline militante. La fin, surprenante, est un enchantement.
