You've Always Been Wrong is a collection of prose and poetic works by the French writer Rene Daumal (1908-1944). A fitful interloper among the Surrealists, Daumal rejected all forms of dogmatic thought, whether religious, philosophical, aesthetic, or political. Much like the Surrealists (and French theorists of more recent decades), Daumal saw in the strict forms and certainties of traditional metaphysics a type of thought that enslaves people even as it pretends to liberate them. These "cadavers of thought," Daumal wrote with youthful bravado, "must be met with storms of doubt, blasphemes, and kerosene for the temples." Daumal tied Surrealism with mystical traditions. A devoted student of Eastern religions, philosophy, and literature, he combined his skepticism about Western metaphysics with a mystic's effort to maintain intense wakefulness to the present moment and to the irreducible particularity of all objects and experience. Such wakefulness, according to Daumal, leads inevitably to an overwhelming (and redemptive) "vision of the absurd." Daumal's important place in French culture of the late 1920s and 1930s has been assured by both his writings and his role as cofounder of the avant-garde journal Le Grand Jeu. Written between 1928 and 1930, You've Always Been Wrong reveals Daumal's thought as it was coalescing around the rejection of Western metaphysics and the countervailing allure of Eastern mysticism. Uspořádal a k vydání připravil Miloslav Topinka ve spolupráci s Ladislavem Šerým, kteří také napsali úvodní texty. Ediční poznámka a výběr ilustrací Miloslav Topinka. Ve francouzské literatuře tohoto sloletí najdeme, přes její mnohotvárnost a černost mnohých překvapení či extrémů, jen málo příkladů tak výsostně uměleckého dobrodružství a tak fascinující touhy hledat a nalézat jako v případě Vysoké hry (Le Grand Jeu). Její odkaz byl příznačně pochopen až následujícími generacemi, jak je to u uměleckých a myšlenkových vzepětí ducha, jež předběhla svou dobu, téměř pravidlem. V tomto smyslu se Vysoká hra i pozdější dílo obou jejích nejvýraznčjších představitelů, René Daumala a Rogera Gilbert-Lecomta, staví po bok největším myšlenkovým a literárním výkonům tohoto století. Zdá-li se toto tvrzení příliš odvážné, neuškodí uvědomit si, že skupina Vysoká hra vlastně dodnes nemá žádné důstojné pokračovatele: cesta, kterou před sebou vytyčila a po níž učinila první kroky, přece jen vyžaduje příliš mnoho odvahy a obětí.

V roce 1930 začal pod vedením Jeanne de Salzmann praktikovat gurdžijevovskou „Práci“. Kromě esejí a básní je také autorem dvou novel Velká pitka a Hora analogie (kterou již nestihl dokončit, neboť podlehl tuberkulóze). Veškeré jeho dílo bylo vedeno dvěma ideály: sebevýstavbou a pomoci druhým°, svou práci lapidárně definoval těmito slovy: ...odnaučit se planě snít a naučit se myslet, odnaučit se filosofovat a naučit se skutečně vyjadřovat.

Rozsáhlý výbor z korespondence básníka, filosofa a indologa René Daumala, který francouzský editor označil za jednu z nejkrásnějších knih 20. století, zahrnuje období 1932 - 1944, tedy období po rozpadu literární skupiny Vysoká hra až do autorovy předčasné smrti. Mezi adresáty dopisů patří Maurice Henry, Rolland de Renéville, Jean Paulhan, Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, Luc Dietrich, Jeanne de Salzmann, Léon Pierre-Quint a mnoho dalších. Knihu doplňuje překlad rukopisných záznamů R. Daumala nedávno objevených v knihovně Jacquese Douceta v Paříži.

"La négation "pure", loin d'être une simple opération de la logique discursive est, pour Daumal, un "ACTE positif" qui lui permet à "chaque instant" de faire le point du chemin parcouru et d'apprécier combien il s'est dégagé, chaque fois par un acte voulu et vécu, de tout ce qui le lie à une réalité épaisse - dépourvue de lumière.
