An seinem einundvierzigsten Geburtstag fährt der Polizist Charlie Bradshaw mit dem Adirondeck Trailways Bus aus seinem heimatlichen Saratoga nach New York, um den verschwundenen fünfundzwanzigjährigen Sohn seiner alten Highschool-Flamme zu suchen. Bradshaw fühlt sich für den zu Drogen neigenden Sam ein wenig verantwortlich, dachte er doch fünfzehn Jahre lang, dass Sam sein illegitimer Sohn sei. Nach seiner Ankunft in New York bittet er die dortige Polizei, ihm bei der Suche nach Sam zu helfen. Doch er wird nur ausgelacht und sogar verdächtigt, ein amouröses Abenteuer mit seiner Suche nach Sam zu bemänteln, denn schließlich sei er auf eigene Kosten, also nicht dienstlich in der Stadt. Charlie Bradshaw beschließt daher, Sam allein aufzustöbern. Er weiß immerhin dessen Adresse und Stammbar 'Lamplighter'. Doch der 'Lamplighter' wird zur Falle.

Saratoga ist in den USA berühmt für seine Pferderennbahn. Als der Rennstallbesitzer erschossen wird, für den Charlie Bradshaw als Sicherheitschef arbeitet, vermutet die Polizei einen Racheakt wegen dessen zwielichtiger Vergangenheit als Glücksspieler. Charlie selbst ist davon nicht überzeugt, aber als ehemaliger Cop darf er in dieser Sache eigentlich nicht mehr ermitteln.

Das Böse ist nichts Fremdes, es wohnt gleich nebenan... Wie ein Lauffeuer verbreitet sich die Nachricht in der kleinen Stadt Brewster in Rhode Island: Auf der Säuglingsstation ist ein Baby verschwunden, und im Bettchen liegt eine Schlange. Dann wird ein Toter gefunden, ermordet und grausam skalpiert. Wo kommen die Kojoten her, die nachts durch die Stadt streifen? Haben die seltsamen Hippies etwas damit zu tun? Betreiben sie einen Hexen- und Satanskult? Als auch noch eine Katze erhängt aufgefunden wird, gerät ganz Brewster in Panik.

Studentem utopeným ve školním bazénu se pro ředitele tohoto ústavu otevírá znovu minulost, před kterou se chtěl útěkem do neperspektivního místa na podřadné škole zachránit. Někdo mu to však nechce dopřát, někdo trvá na tom, aby účty s minulostí byly srovnány, a v uzavřeném mikrosvětě školy se nezastaví ani před vraždou.
