Životopisů svatých je v evropské literatuře nespočet, avšak životopis Martina z Tours od Sulpicia Severa se vyjímá jako první významná hagiografie o domácím světci-nemučedníkovi, která se stala vzorovým textem hagiografického žánru. Sulpicius Severus, typický „poslední Říman“ 4. století, do zdánlivě jednoduchého vyprávění o vojákovi, jenž se stal biskupem a divotvůrcem, vkládá své klasické rétorické školení. Jeho prostota je vědomou volbou intelektuála, který se snaží být budovatelem nového světa uvnitř římské společnosti. Kromě Života svatého Martina (Vita Martini) napsal Sulpicius také další spisy: tři Listy, které se zaměřují na Martinovu smrt, tři knihy Dialogů, v nichž přátelé v duchu antických symposií vyprávějí o Martinovi, a závěr své Kroniky, popisující tragickou událost roku 385, kdy se Martin pokusil zabránit první popravě heretika. Tato publikace přináší českému čtenáři soubor textů o svatém Martinovi, doplněný studií M. C. Putny, která se zabývá Sulpiciovou a Martinovou Gallii čtvrtého století, rozdíly mezi historickým a literárním Martinem a vývojem kultu svatého Martina jako národního patrona Francie a emblematické postavy křesťanské Evropy.
