Lear, re di Britannia ha tre figlie tra cui vorrebbe dividere il regno, ma Cordelia, la minore, viene diseredata e va sposa al re di Francia. Il regno è diviso tra Gonerilla, moglie del duca d'Albany, e Regana, moglie del duca di Cornovaglia. Le due scacciano il padre dal regno e in sua difesa giunge con l'esercito francese Cordelia che però viene catturata e uccisa per ordine di Edmondo, usurpatore della contea di Gloucester. Lear muore di dolore, Gonerilla, innamorata di Edmondo, uccide la sorella e trama l'assassinio del marito. Scoperta, si uccide e il regno della Britannia sarà del duca d'Albany.

Nell'opera teatrale di Shakespeare, Amleto è l'espressione più studiata, più seguita nelle minime svolte della sua natura, di un amore/rifiuto della vita che si realizza nella sua passione di inventare la propria e le altrui esistenze; di una profonda incertezza della propria realtà che conduce a creare, attraverso la messinscena e l'intrigo, precise immagini di sé affinché queste restituiscano un artificiale senso di realtà. Morto Edoardo IV, diventa reggente in attesa che il figlio e successore del re, compia la maggiore età. Fa però subito rinchiudere il ragazzo con il fratello, duca di York, nella Torre di Londra. Ottiene così il trono e fa uccidere i figli di Edoardo IV. Ripudiata Anna, vuole sposare la nipote Elisabetta, ma il duca di Buckingham si ribella e si schiera col duca di Richmond che muove contro Riccardo. Il duca di Buckingham viene ucciso, ma il duca di Richmond vince in battaglia e Riccardo muore combattendo.
