The major part of this book is devoted to interviews with top representatives of the Palestinian resistance movement HAMAS in Gaza and Nablus (West Bank), but it considers other elements of «HAMAS-reality» as well. A selection of highly controversial documents with regard to the Palestinian-Israeli problem offers an unusual «insight view» into this conflict. A bibliography and useful addresses of relevant print media and research centers in the region complete the book.

Le présent ouvrage résulte des travaux d'un colloque international organisé en février 1997 par le Centre Chaim Herzog d’études sur le Moyen-Orient et de diplomatie (Université Ben-Gurion du Néguev, Beer-Sheva, Israël), en collaboration avec le Centre culturel français de Beer-Sheva. À cette occasion, des universitaires et chercheurs du monde arabe, d’Europe et d’Israël se sont réunis pour discuter d’un thème visionnaire, à un moment où des espoirs de réconciliation entre Israéliens et Arabes semblaient enfin possibles. Les contributions de ce volume visent à exprimer les préoccupations thématiques de leurs auteurs tout en témoignant du climat d’échange et d’amitié exceptionnel qui a prévalu lors du colloque. Ces articles reflètent non seulement les idées spécifiques de chaque co-auteur, mais ils illustrent également un moment marquant de dialogue et de camaraderie entre les participants, soulignant l'importance de la coopération intellectuelle dans un contexte de tensions persistantes. This collective book is the first volume of the social sciences oriented series Controversies from the Promised Land . Mainly Palestinian academics and opposition leaders (Hamas, Islamic Jihad) analyze and interpret the socio-political situation in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, 6 years after the Israeli-Palestinian «Oslo Agreements». «Academic Studies» and «Essays-Reports-Opinion Papers» build the two parts of this book. It addresses scholars, decision-makers, opinion-leaders who want to understand roots and essentials of a historical and political conflict which endorses the whole 20th century, displaying enough vicious potential to remain on stage after the Year 2000, too.
