Der Anteil erneuerbarer Energie am deutschen Energiemix steigt stetig. Insbesondere die steigende Einspeisung von Windenergie an Deutschlands Küsten sowie die Anbindung neuer Offshore Windparks überfordert die Netzinfrastruktur zunehmend. Diese ist nicht für den Abtransport solch großer Strommengen ausgelegt. Bei Einspeisespitzen werden die Netze überlastet, sodass die Netzstabilität gefährdet ist. Um dem entgegenzuwirken muss Einspeisemanagement betrieben werden und das Potential der regenerativ erzeugten Energie abgeriegelt werden. Damit die erneuerbaren Energien wie gewünscht in das deutsche Energieversorgungssystem integriert werden können, müssen verschiedene Optionen geprüft werden. Zu diesen gehören neben dem Ausbau der Netze auch der Bau von Energiespeichern, die Verbrauchersteuerung und die Kombination nicht konventioneller Energiewandler zu virtuellen Kraftwerken. Das Ziel ist es diese Optionen optimal miteinander zu vereinen. Zu den Optionen des Netzausbaus zählen das Freileitungsmonitoring, der Einsatz von Hochtemperaturleiterseilen, die Umrüstung auf höhere Spannungsebenen sowie der Freileitungs- und Erdkabelneubau. Diese werden aus technischer Sicht beschrieben und auf ihre Wirtschaftlichkeit hin untersucht. Darüber hinaus wird ein Überblick über die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen des Netzausbaus gegeben.
