Exploring the Academic Performance of Adolescent Males
The study explores the declining postsecondary enrolment of young males since the mid-1980s, linking it to their academic performance in secondary schools. Through interviews with adolescent males and their parents, it identifies key factors affecting their performance, including noncognitive skills, attitudes towards school, and perceptions of teachers. A significant finding reveals that most participants were not considering careers requiring a university degree, and they exhibited weak noncognitive skills, especially in time management and seeking help. Additionally, there was a prevalent dislike for mathematics, crucial for various fields.
