El vellocino de oro fue encargado a Lope de Vega para una representación que las damas de la corte efectuaron el 17 de mayo de 1622 en los jardines de Aranjuez, formando parte de los festejos para el cumpleaños de Felipe IV: una extraordinaria puesta en escena de la cual quedan muchos testimonios, y que un incendio interrumpió. El texto lo vuelven a poner en escena en Viena diez años más tarde, en 1633, las damas españolas que habían acompañado a la infanta María, hermana de Felipe IV y esposa del rey de Hungría y Bohemia, el futuro emperador Fernando III, otra vez para celebrar el cumpleaños de Fernando, con un espectáculo palatino de gran lujo. Existe también una edición impresa en Milán el 1 de mayo de 1649, y quizás la comedia se puso en escena para los festejos milaneses que acogieron a María Ana de Austria, hija de la María que había promocionado la versión vienesa; la joven María Ana pasa por la capital del Milanesado en su viaje que la llevará a Madrid, para ser esposa de su tío Felipe IV. Estudiar el „viaje“ del texto de Lope nos permite trazar importantes momentos no sólo literarios, sino espectaculares y políticos. Lope publica su pieza en la Parte XX de sus comedias, en 1624, considerado el texto más fidedigno; se proponen las variantes de las ediciones sucesivas (1625 y 1627), así como las de Viena, que atestiguan la adaptación del texto a las nuevas circunstancias teatrales y dinásticas, y las de la edición milanesa. Además en el Apéndice se edita la Fiesta que se hizo en Aranjuez a los años del Rey nuestro señor don Felipe IV y la Relación de la fiesta de Aranjuez en verso de Antonio Hurtado de Mendoza, que describe la fiesta de 1622, conservado en un manuscrito en París, el cual nos proporciona interesantes pormenores inéditos.

This first critical edition of Lope de Vega's obscure historical play based on the Spanish victory at Gembloux on January 30, 1578 challenges all previous literary assessments of Los espanoles en Flandes (The Spaniards in Flanders) as a meaningless dramatic product. While Lope strictly adhered to Alonso Vazquez's factual account for the historical thread, the 'Phoenix' demonstrates his creative genius in the use of the Gypsy language (germanesca) and the commercial (ships, spices, soft goods) imagery dominant in the trivial fictional subplot. Indeed, trade, especially of foodstuffs and specifically of wheat as evidenced in the name of the gracioso and protagonist of the secondary plot, Salvado (bran or chaff of wheat), provides the primary focus of the play. If mercantilism was a deliberate pursuit of economic interests in order to buttress the state (J. I. Israel), then Lope's spectators would have recognized the simple dichotomy of the main and secondary plots as analogous, respectively, to the dual politique and socio-economic approach to government. In this light, Los espanoles en Flandes offers an objective and poignant view of the realities which powered Imperial Spain's war machinery in the Low Countries during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

Lope de Vega (1562-1635), widely regarded as the architect of the drama of the Spanish Golden Age, created plots and characters notable for their energy, inventiveness, and dramatic power. This unique edition includes his most famous play, Fuente Ovejuna , as well as The Knight from Olmedo and Punishment without Revenge .
