Allen Ginsberg

    3 giugno 1926 – 5 aprile 1997

'I saw you, Walt Whitman, childless, lonely old grubber, poking among the meats in the refrigerator and eyeing the grocery boys' Allen Ginsberg's poetry fomented a social and political revolution, and with its rawness and spontaneity changed the course of the American lyric. To read his profane and prophetic verses, about sex, death and America, as well as the humour of his humiliations and self-transformations, is to stretch consciousness and grasp an entire era.

April 2022.

Mezi nejznámější básnické skladby Allena Ginsberga patří Kadiš, velkolepý žalozpěv na básníkovu zesnulou matku, jejíž duševní choroba silně ovlivnila jeho dětství. Zárodky básně vznikly v Paříži v roce 1957, kde Ginsberg s beatnickými tvůrci prostřednictvím halucinogenů „rozšiřoval sféru vědomí“. V Kadiši se mu podařilo vypsat se z hlubokých traumat, přičemž k odemknutí podvědomí použil morfium a metamfetamin. Konečná revize proběhla po návratu z Peru, kde užil ayahuasku. Výmluvné jsou názvy dalších básní ve sbírce, jako Meskalin či Kyselina lysergová; autor v nich opět vymítá ducha své matky, lamentuje nad iluzorností univerza a prožívá pocity tvůrčího zmaru i duchovního prozření. V psychedelickém proudu vědomí nechává volně plynout vize, nářky a chvalozpěvy, čímž k nám po šedesáti letech skrze své verše stále živě promlouvá. Básnická sbírka Kadiš a jiné básně, vydaná v roce 1961, obsahuje Ginsbergovy básně z konce padesátých let v klasickém překladu Jana Zábrany.

V knize Nejlepší hlavy mé generace Ginsberg vychází především z vlastní zkušenosti, popisuje svá první setkání s Kerouacem, Burroughsem i dalšími členy beat generation a nabízí vskutku neotřelý, kritický a přitom nesmírně živý pohled na jedno z nejvýznamnějších literárních hnutí dvacátého století.

Rainy night on Union Square, full moon. Want more poems? Wait till I m dead.Allen Ginsberg, August 8, 1990, 3:30 A.M. The first new Ginsberg collection in over fifteen years, Wait Till I m Dead is a landmark publication, edited by renowned Ginsberg scholar Bill Morgan and introduced by award-winning poet and Ginsberg enthusiast Rachel Zucker. Ginsberg wrote incessantly for more than fifty years, often composing poetry on demand, and many of the poems collected in this volume were scribbled in letters or sent off to obscure publications and unjustly forgotten. Wait Till I m Dead, which spans the whole of Ginsberg s long writing career, from the 1940s to the 1990s, is a testament to Ginsberg s astonishing writing and singular aesthetics. Following the chronology of his life, Wait Till I m Dead reproduces the poems together with extensive notes. Containing 104 previously uncollected poems and accompanied by original photographs, Wait Till I m Dead is the final major contribution to Ginsberg s sprawling oeuvre, a must-read for Ginsberg neophytes and longtime fans alike.

Visionary poet Allen Ginsberg was one of the most influential cultural and literary figures of the 20th century, his face and political causes familiar to millions who had never even read his poetry. And yet he is a figure that remains little understood, especially how a troubled young man became one of the intellectual and artistic giants of the postwar era. He never published an autobiography or memoirs, believing that his body of work should suffice. The Essential Ginsberg attempts a more intimate and rounded portrait of this iconic poet by bringing together for the first time his most memorable poetry but also journals, music, photographs and letters, much of it never before published.

Perhaps one of the last great dual correspondences of the twentieth century, Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg: The Letters reveals not only the process of creation of the two most celebrated members of the Beat Generation, but also the unfolding of a remarkable friendship of immense pathos and spiritual depth. Through this exhilarating exchange of letters, two-thirds of which have never been published before, Kerouac and Ginsberg emerge first and foremost as writers of artistic passion, innovation, and genius. Vivid and enthralling, the letters, which date from their first meeting in 1944 to Kerouac's untimely death in 1969, chronicle the endless struggle, anguish, and sacrifice involved in giving form to their literary visions.

As the chief figure among the Beats, Ginsberg changed the course of American poetry, liberating it from closed academic forms with the creation of open, vocal, spontaneous, and energetic postmodern verse. Ginsberg's raw tones and attitudes of spiritual liberation also helped catalyze a psychological revolution that has become a permanent part of our cultural heritage, profoundly influencing not only poetry, popular song, and speech but also our view of the world

Here, accompanied by dozens of unique photographs, are the very best of Victor Bockris's infamous interviews, essays, and observations on the stars of downtown Manhattan in the 1970s and 1980s. The internationally acclaimed biographer Bockris was there as a witness, friend, collaborator, and co-conspirator. Some of the stars were founding members of Beat or Punk, others were just passing through. But all of them—rockers, rebels, artists, and intellectuals—revealed more to Bockris than they did to any other writer: Allen Ginsberg, Richard Hell, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Debbie Harry, William Burroughs, Patti Smith, Marianne Faithfull, Keith Richards, Terry Southern, Martin Amis, and Susan Sontag. Bockris's conclusion—that Punk owed the Beats a big debt and that the Beats were in turn re-animated by the Punks—is argued from the perspective of someone who was in the thick of it, and who loved every minute of it.

Famously energizing the Beat Generation literary movement upon encountering Gregory Corso, Jack Kerouac & Wm Burroughs in mid-century NYC, he influenced generations of writers, musicians & poets. We lost a great figures of 20th-century American literary & cultural history when he died on 4/5/97. This volume of final poems commemorates his death's anniversary & includes verses written just before dying. His title poem, Death & Fame, ponders his life, &, in his inimitable way, how he'd like a funeral arranged & who'd be there. He reflects on life as a celebrity, contemplating past lovers, friends & fans. In "The Ballad of the Skeletons", he shares his unsettlingly controversial thoughts on America's political & social systems. "Things I'll Not Do (Nostalias)", most poignant poem in the collection, was written six days before he died. He ruminates on the people, places & events that held importance for him he'll leave behind. His signature style & perspective are remarkably present in all the poems as we are allowed a last glimpse into his mind.

Here, in what has become a classic of its kind since its publication in 1978, is the fascinating story of Jack Kerouac, "King of the Beats" and American literary legend, recorded through the voices of his friends and lovers. Authors Barry Gifford and Lawrence Lee retraced Kerouac's life at home and on the road and talked with the prophets, musicians, poets, socialites, and working people who knew Jack Kerouac. Some are famous like Allen Ginsberg, Gore Vidal, William Burroughs, Gary Snyder, among others; and some are not like Jack's boyhood buddies, his lovers, and his barroom companions. All, however, have contributed to a remarkably vibrant, riveting portrait of a life. We see Jack at Columbia University and on the scene of Greenwich Village; speeding across the tarmac of America with Neal Cassidy ("Dan Moriarty" in Kerouac's classic novel, On the Road); at home with his possessive mother; in California, drinking wine and talking Buddhism; and finally, in Florida, where his life ends tragically at forty-seven years old. Jack's Book, like Kerouac's novels, makes a unique contribution to our understanding of a man and a generation that shaped the dreams and visions of those who followed.

An early epistolary novel by William Burroughs, whose 1951 account of himself as as junkie, published under the pseudonym William Lee, ended Yage may be the final fix. In letters to Allen Ginsberg, an unknown young poet in New York, his journey to the Amazon jungle is recorded, detailing picaresque incidents of a search for a telepathic-hallucinogenic-mind-expanding drug called yage (Ayahuasca, or Banisteripsis Caape), used by Amazon indian doctors for finding lost objects, mostly bodies and souls. Author and recipient of these letters met again in New York, Christmas 1953, and edited the writings to form this single book. The correspondence contains the first seeds of the later Burroughsian fantasy in Naked Lunch. Seven years later Ginsberg in Peru writes his old guru an account of his own visions and terrors with the same drug, appealing for further counsel. Burroughs' mysterious reply is sent. The volume concludes with two epilogues: a short note from Ginsberg on his return from the Orient years later reassuring Self that he is still here on earth, and a final poetic cut-up by Burroughs, I am dying, Meester?
