Maggiori informazioni sul libro

This collection of essays was prepared for the international conference “Maritime Space in Traditional Chinese Sources” held at Munich University in February 2005. The contributions explore various aspects of East Asian seas, focusing on the Yellow and East China Seas, while also touching on adjacent areas. The essays examine the perception of maritime space in traditional Chinese sources, including the division of this space, the management of trade routes, and China’s coastal waters. In addition to textual sources, maps are analyzed to enhance understanding. The discussion also addresses related themes such as trade, travel, diplomacy, military controls, and daily life during sea voyages, though these are secondary to the main focus on geography. The volume is organized into three sections: (1) Maritime Space: Trade and Defence; (2) Maritime Space: Coasts, Routes, Oceans; and (3) Maritime Space and Maps. Contributions vary in geographical focus, with some addressing the Liaodong-Korea region and others the South China Sea or beyond. The military aspect is present throughout, particularly in coastal defense discussions. The concept of contact zones is explored, revealing a spectrum of perspectives on the sea as both a barrier and a means of connection to the outer world.
