As early as 1884, while tutoring a boy with special needs, Steiner began exploring the application of spiritual knowledge to practical life. He published the central essay of this work in 1907, presenting his foundational ideas on education. In it, he outlines the spiritual processes of human development, emphasizing the importance of understanding a child's growth through successive "births," starting with the physical body's entry into earthly life and culminating in the emergence of the "I"-being in adulthood. The book also features early lectures on education from 1906 to 1911, predating the establishment of the Waldorf movement in 1919. The essay "The Education of the Child in the Light of Spiritual Science," translated by George and Mary Adams, first appeared in German in the journal Lucifer-Gnosis (nr. 33) in 1907. It is part of vol. 34 of the Collected Works of Rudolf Steiner, published by Rudolf Steiner Verlag in 1987. Additional lectures included are "Teaching from a Foundation of Spiritual Insight," "Education in the Light of Spiritual Science," "Education and Spiritual Science," and "Interests, Talent, and Education," all translated and published in various volumes of the Collected Works, along with "Interests, Talents, and Educating Children," which originally appeared in the magazine Die Menschenschule in the 1950s and 1970s.
