The story follows Nicholas Nickleby, who, after his father's death and loss of family wealth, seeks help from his uncle Ralph in London. Ralph, a cruel businessman, offers Nicholas a low-paying job with Wackford Squeers at a Yorkshire school, Dotheboys Hall. There, Nicholas discovers Squeers' exploitation of vulnerable children, who are mistreated for profit.
