Rudolf Modleys Entwicklung im graphischen Informationsdesign begann in Wien und setzte sich in den USA fort, wo er 1930 ankam. Gemeinsam mit der Kulturanthropologin Margaret Mead gründete er 1966 Glyphs, Inc., um universell verständliche Symbole, sogenannte Glyphs, zu schaffen. Ihr Ziel war es, eine "Weltsprache ohne Worte" zu entwickeln, die kulturelle Barrieren überwindet. Trotz ihrer umfassenden Forschung, Publikationen und Ausstellungspläne blieb das Projekt letztlich unerfüllt und stellte sich als herausfordernd heraus.
