The trilogy that began with the novel Pashazade has reached its conclusion with the titles Effendi and Felaheen. It takes place in an alternative world where Germany emerged as the victorious power of World War I and its ally, the Ottoman Empire, still exists. The hero of the story, after escaping from an American prison, seeks refuge in the Egyptian city of Alexandria, where his family is rightly regarded as esteemed members of the local elite. The city, with its exotic bazaar, blends the unmistakable essence of Islamic culture with strong influences from brash America, triumphant Germany, cultured Britain, and refined France. However, the regained peace does not last long, as a significant member of the family has been murdered, and all clues lead directly to the recent returnee.
