I fatti narrati ne “Il visconte di Bragelonne" si svolgono fra il 1661, anno della morte di Mazarino, e il 1673 anno dell’arresto di Fouquet, e ultimo capitolo della vita di D’Artagnan. I protagonisti sono sempre loro, i moschettieri, solo invecchiati e divisi dagli eventi. Athos è diventato padre di un’amabile giovane: Raul, il visconte di Bragelonne del titolo, col quale vive in una specie di eden privato in campagna. Porthos è diventato, grazie a un matrimonio azzeccato, un signorotto di provincia che si diletta in caccia e banchetti prelibati. D’Artagnan è a capo del corpo dei moschettieri e serve, ancora fedelmente, il nuovo giovane re. Aramis ha preso i voti. E' quest’ultimo che riunisce ancora gli amici, anche se non più tutti dalla stessa parte della barricata, per un’altra avventura, l’ultima.

Camelie profumate: sono i fiori che accompagnano sempre Margherita Gautier e che diventano il perfetto simbolo di un personaggio mitico. Margherita: mantenuta del duca, amore impossibile di Armand, fragile donna malata e vittima dei suoi vizi, eppure misteriosamente forte. Un personaggio indimenticabile, che donò al suo giovanissimo autore (nel 1848, quando uscì la prima edizione, il figlio del grande Alexandre Dumas non aveva che ventiquattro anni) un successo clamoroso e ininterrotto, capace di superare i confini del tempo e dell’arte. L’autore stesso ne realizzò una versione teatrale; pochi anni dopo, Giuseppe Verdi saprà farne una trasposizione sublime, in musica, con La Traviata. L'epoca in cui il racconto si svolge è segnata da due grandi avvenimenti storici: la monarchia di luglio con il giuramento di Louis Philippe d'Orleans che diventa re (1830), e l'insurrezione del popolo parigino con l'abdicazione del re e la proclamazione della repubblica (1848). La protagonista, Erminia (lo stesso nome del personaggio della Gerusalemme liberata), è una vera donna guerriera perché, orfana di madre, è stata allevata dal padre come un ragazzo abituato a maneggiare fioretto e pistola. Personaggio romantico nella sua passione estrema è anche una donna libera e dominatrice, la vergine assassina secondo la mitologia delle amazzoni, che si vendica dando la morte senza rimorsi.

Nel 1850, mentre si preparava a partire per l'esilio a New York, Giuseppe Garibaldi iniziò a scrivere le sue memorie, riflettendo su tre momenti cruciali della sua vita. Tra il 1836 e il 1848, combatté per la libertà della Repubblica di Montevideo, e successivamente, tornato in Italia, partecipò alla prima guerra d'indipendenza, dove i garibaldini si distinsero nonostante la diffidenza di Carlo Alberto e i conflitti con i generali sabaudi. Nel 1849, Garibaldi si trovò nella disperata difesa della Repubblica romana, dove molti patrioti sacrificarono la vita per un'Italia unita. La fuga da Roma e la morte di Anita segnarono un punto di svolta nella sua esistenza, portandolo a chiudere il racconto delle sue memorie. Tuttavia, l'anno successivo, Alessandro Dumas (padre) lo convinse a continuare la narrazione fino alla vigilia della spedizione dei Mille. Dumas seguì Garibaldi a Napoli e diresse il quotidiano "L'Indipendente". Le memorie furono pubblicate tra il 1859 e il 1862 in diverse edizioni: quella di Theodore Dwight in inglese, quella di Speranza con Schwarz in tedesco e quelle di Dumas in francese. Le edizioni di Dumas, in particolare, aumentarono la fama di Garibaldi, già soggetto di opere precedenti dello scrittore.

È il 1844 quando appare per la prima volta "La guerra delle donne". Lo scenario è quello della Fronda, degli anni attorno al 1650, di una Francia in cui la regina, Anna d'Austria, e il suo ministro, il cardinale Mazzarino, devono fronteggiare la ribellione diffusa di una nobiltà che ha eletto a suo simbolo la principessa di Condé. Il lettore scoprirà da solo a quali intensità Dumas riesce a portare il fuoco ardente dei nascondimenti, dei sotterfugi, dei ricatti, delle fedeltà e dei tradimenti, in questo capolavoro del genere. E se ai personaggi maschili della storia non resta che ribadire il cliché dell'onore e del coraggio, saranno le donne a rompere il cerchio dello stereotipo, per presentarsi con un inedito spessore di complessità, di abnegazione, di fedeltà dolorosa alla causa creduta giusta, anche quando essa costringa a sfiorare i confini dell'abisso, o persino a superarli.

La difficile arte della cronaca, come evidenziato da autori come Stendhal e Manzoni, richiede all'autore di sapersi mettere da parte. Alexandre Dumas affronta il caso di Beatrice Cenci, in un periodo simile a quello in cui Stendhal esplorava storie straordinarie del Rinascimento italiano. Mentre Stendhal applicava la sua oggettività all'enigma della passione amorosa, Dumas si concentra sulla violenza, quella di una giovane che si vendica del padre abusante. La violenza si riflette anche nell'ambiguità del Rinascimento, caratterizzato da sottomissione patriarcale e giustizia concepita come vendetta. Dumas narra la vicenda con un gusto per l'orrore e l'intrigo, anticipando elementi del futuro genere giallo e rendendo evidente l'influenza dei racconti veri e tragici del primo Ottocento.

For those trying to read The Musketeers Saga: I was thoroughly confused by the placement of Ten Years Later in the series. In the original French, there are only three (3) books - 1. The Three Musketeers 2. Twenty Years After and 3. Ten Years Later. Thats it - no more. But when translated, most English editions split the behemoth Ten Years Later into a Trilogy (and some four - which make it all the more confusing!). So the reading list should be 1. The Three Musketeers 2. Twenty Years After and 3a. The Vicomte de Bragelonne 3b. Louise de la Valliere and 3c. The Man in the Iron Mask. Five books - thats the total series! I highly recommend this Classic edition - which has the complete unabridged and annotated version the book. For adventure and pleasure in reading, you cannot beat Alexandre Dumas and his Musketers. (The movies dont hold a candle to the books.)
