"When Moral und Politik was first published in Germany it provoked heated debate both in and out of the classroom. It even prompted Vittorio Hosle's critics to publish a collection of essays that responded to his provocative arguments. Available for the first time in an English translation, Morals and Politics, a tour-de-force, is certain to once again cause considerable discussion.". "In this ambitious work Hosle attempts no less than an outline of a political ethics for the twenty-first century. He raises the question of the relationship between morals and politics and proposes a relatively complex answer to it. This answer involves a search for a synthesis between the classical European conviction that political philosophy must be based on ethics and the more modern notion that ethical arguments themselves have a political function. Hosle's goal is to create a concrete political ethics for the situation in which humanity finds itself today."--BOOK JACKET.
Exploring the intersection of theology and philosophy, Vittorio Hösle addresses the challenges faced by rational theology in a modern context. He tackles significant issues such as teleology post-Darwin, theodicy, and the mind-body problem. The second part delves into historical philosophical interpretations of the Bible and connects New Testament concepts with German idealism. Additionally, Hösle analyzes the rationalist theologies of notable thinkers and concludes with an evaluation of Charles Taylor's secularization theory. This work is aimed at students and scholars in related fields.

A short history of German philosophy
- 304pagine
- 11 ore di lettura
This concise yet comprehensive book offers an original history of German-language philosophy from the Middle Ages to the present. In an accessible narrative, Vittorio Hösle elucidates complex ideas while tracing the evolution of German philosophy and its significant influence on literature, politics, and science. Beginning with the medieval mystic Meister Eckhart, the text explores the philosophical shifts initiated by Luther's Reformation and provides a detailed account of the classical age, highlighting figures like Leibniz and Kant, as well as the emergence of new humanistic approaches in Lessing, Hamann, Herder, and Schiller. It also covers the early Romantics and Idealists such as Fichte, Schelling, and Hegel. Subsequent chapters examine the disintegration of the German synthesis through Schopenhauer, Feuerbach, Marx, and Nietzsche. In the twentieth century, the narrative delves into analytical philosophy with Frege and the Vienna and Berlin circles, the establishment of historical sciences in Neo-Kantianism and Dilthey, and the evolution of phenomenology from Husserl to Heidegger. The book also addresses Nazi philosophers and key West German thinkers like Gadamer and those from the Frankfurt schools. Concluding with an analysis of the decline of this philosophical tradition post-World War II, it serves as an invaluable resource for students of philosophy and those interested in German intellectual and cultural history.
