Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's "Minna von Barnhelm, oder das Soldatengluck" is a five-act comedy first published in 1767 and premiered on September 30 of the same year in Hamburg. This complete new edition includes a biography of the author and is edited by Karl-Maria Guth. The text is based on the works edited by Herbert G. Gopfert and others, spanning volumes 1-8 published by Hanser in Munich from 1970 onwards. The pagination from the original edition is included as marginal notes. The cover design by Thomas Schultz-Overhage features Joshua Reynolds' painting of Lady Anne Bingham from 1786 and is set in Minion Pro, 11 pt. Lessing, born in 1729 in Kamenz, was the son of a pastor and studied theology and philosophy in Leipzig. At eighteen, he published his first poems and stories and became inspired by Molière and Voltaire. In Berlin, he wrote critiques for the Berlinische Privilegierte Zeitung and began his first dramas. After earning a doctorate in philosophy, he engaged in Berlin's literary scene, befriending figures like Friedrich Nicolai and Moses Mendelssohn. He published the first German bourgeois tragedy, "Miss Sara Sampson," in 1755. Elected to the Prussian Academy of Sciences, he became the dramaturg at the Hamburger Nationaltheater in 1767 and published the "Hamburgische Dramaturgie."
