Leslie J. Paldon

The survival of an incorrigible optimist
    • Peeping through the planks of a cattle wagon’s door, young László Popper anxiously wondered where the speeding train was taking him during World War II. Throughout the conflict, he faced numerous life-threatening situations but, with the help of brave friends, kind strangers, and a stroke of luck, he survived persecutions, forced labor, deportation, and a deadly siege, ultimately witnessing the Red Army liberate Budapest from Nazi control. With the devastation of fascism shattering his life, the son of a respected Jewish family turned his aspirations toward Palestine. Pursuing his Zionist dream, he found himself embroiled in yet another war, fighting alongside future leaders for a Jewish National Home. Many around him perished, but he endured, as did the nascent State of Israel. Adopting the name Leslie Paldon, inspired by the Hebrew word for steel, he forged a future filled with optimism despite the challenges he faced. As the years passed, many stories remained untold, buried yet haunting. Eventually, his grandchildren's questions prompted Leslie to confront his past and share his extraordinary journey of survival. This narrative captures the essence of his remarkable life and resilience.
