Biribi was published in 1889, less than twenty years after France's defeat. It denounced the sadism of the chaouchs, the sergeants, in the disciplinary battalions, the incessant bullying, and the roads traced in the Tunisian desert at the cost of sacrificed human lives. Biribi was not a penal colony but the ultimate punishment that the army reserved for its dissenters. More libertarian than anarchist, Darien ended up in Biribi at the age of twenty, having accumulated disciplinary infractions and refusals to obey, after experiencing all stages of French military prisons. It would take Albert Londres, half a century later, for the infamy to be denounced, and after a rough press campaign and numerous parliamentary commissions, the penal colony was closed. Darien did not witness this; he died in 1921.
