    • Even if James Boswell hadn't written the The Life of Johnson, he would be famous for this memoir of eighteenth-century London life. Boswell arrived in the great metropolis from his native Edinburgh in 1762, and he kept a daily journal of his nine-month sojourn. Bawdy, witty, and brimming with fascinating details, the accounts range from his illicit encounters with prostitutes to his momentous meeting with Samuel Johnson. Boswell's London diary disappeared for 150 years, finally turning up in the 1920s as the literary find of the twentieth century. Unlike his other journals, it escaped nineteenth-century bowdlerization, allowing the author's voice to emerge with strikingly modern candor. Boswell writes frankly of his struggles with depression and his sexual obsessions. His painstaking records of the lively repartee of his mentor's literary circle formed the backbone of The Life of Johnson, and just as that book proved him a worthy biographer, so this one shows him an equally captivating subject.

    • Confessions of a Music Critic grew out of one of the fascinating talks the author regularly gives on the music club circuit and draws on his experiences of over 50 years of writing for the Birmingham Post as well as periodicals. Christopher describes his Anglo-Italian upbringing, moving on to take in the many countries he has visited whilst writing features and reviews, including tours by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle. He also covers school teaching in the Birmingham area, lecturing at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, his conducting experiences and even clients at his ill-starred music shop in Moseley. We are taken through the CBSO years from the Town Hall Birmingham to Symphony Hall and from Louis Fremaux to Mirga Grazinyte-Tyla. There are some fascinating tales of world leading soloists and conductors and many stories that are both funny and poignant.

Robert Schumann and Clara Wieck were drawn to each other the moment they met, but there were obstacles in the way. Clara was ten years younger and her domineering father, Friedrich Wieck, Robert's piano teacher, was against their relationship as it developed over the years. He saw Robert as a dissolute womaniser, and he saw his own reflected glory disappearing if Clara's career prospects as a pianist diminished. But the couple did marry, with help from the judiciary, and had a happy life together, so happy that their increasing number of children did indeed hamper Clara's performing opportunities. Then a young composer, Johannes Brahms, came into their household as a disciple of Schumann and nothing would ever be the same again. About The Author Christopher Morley is Chief Music Critic of the Birmingham Post, and contributes to several international magazines. Schumann has always been very special to him, and a visit to the asylum in which the composer died made a huge impression upon him.
