This book is the culmination of 20 years of research, fieldwork and analysis on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, and the impact of Israeli occupation. Discussion of Israeli policy toward Palestinians is often regarded as a taboo subject, with the result that few people -- especially in the U.S. -- understand the origins and consequences of the conflict. Roy's book provides an indispensable context for understanding why the situation remains so intractable. The focus of Roy's work is the Gaza Strip, an area that remains consistently neglected and misunderstood despite its political centrality. Drawing on more than two thousand interviews and extensive first-hand experience, Roy chronicles the impact of Israeli occupation in Palestine over nearly a generation. Exploring the devastating consequences of socio-economic and political decline, this is a unique and powerful account of the reality of life in the West Bank and Gaza. Written by one of the world's foremost scholars of the region, it offers an unrivalled breadth of scholarship and insight
This accompanying publication beautifully showcases the oil paintings, photographs, ceramics, fabrics, decorative screens and works on paper in a stunning display of Vanessa Bell's vibrant and wide-ranging talent. Long overshadowed by the complexity of her family life and romantic entanglements, the editors assess Bell in the context of her relationship with sister, Virginia Woolf, and as muse and confidant to Roger Fry and Duncan Grant but ultimately present an intrepid artist deserving of fresh consideration.
This comprehensive survey of the life and work of the Canadian artist David
Milne (1882-1953) accompanies the first UK exhibition of Milne's work at
Dulwich Picture Gallery and brings together one hundred and twenty of his most
significant works in oil, watercolour and dry-point printmaking. Like the
members of the Group of Seven, Milne primarily chose landscape as his subject
matter. However, his true subject was the process of perception and
representation, reducing his painting to its essentials and infusing it with
his own distinctive modern sensibility. Through the use of photographs,
archival material and Milne's own writings the book presents a moving account
of one man's spiritual and emotional voyage into modernity - from his early
life in small town Ontario, to the bustling sidewalks of New York, on to the
war torn landscapes of northern France as an official war artist and back
again to the woods, lakes and fields of upstate New York. Pivoting as it does
on Milnes war art, which includes some of the most formally daring of his
career, the publication will serve as a poignant locus of remembrance,
underscoring the historic bond between Canada and Great Britain, and offering
a unique perspective on history through the eyes of one of Canada's most
sophisticated modern painters.
"Maud Lewis: Paintings for Sale accompanies a major exhibition of the artist's work at the McMichael Collection of Canadian Art and--featuring many paintings previously unseen by the public--is the most in-depth book on Lewis's art ever produced. The book features a 2,500 word curatorial essay by Sarah Milroy, chief curator at the McMichael Collection of Canadian Art, on Lewis's life and art, focusing especially on her aesthetic achievements, followed by reproductions of approximately 20 artworks of Maud Lewis. Reproductions will showcase Lewis's repetition and re-examination of her favourite subjects such as kittens, oxen, and harbour scenes."--
