Originariamente un uomo forte da circo, fu inviato dal console britannico in Egitto per rimuovere con grande abilità dal Ramesseum di Tebe il colossale busto di Ramses II, comunemente chiamato "il Giovane Memnone". Questo pezzo, spedito da Belzoni in Inghilterra, rimane prominentemente esposto al British Museum, una testimonianza delle sue audaci e spesso controverse spedizioni nel passato dell'Egitto.
