"Glory and Exile: Haida History Robes of Jut-ke-Nay Hazel Wilson presents the complete monumental cycle of ceremonial robes by Haida artist Jut-Ke-Nay, also known as Hazel Anna Wilson. This collection features 51 large blankets that blend painted and appliquéd imagery to weave traditional stories, autobiography, and commentary on significant events like smallpox epidemics and environmental destruction. It celebrates the resilience and survival of the Haida people while challenging colonial narratives of the Northwest Coast. Among Wilson's extensive creations, she is particularly recognized for The Story of K'iid K'iyaas, inspired by the revered tree highlighted in John Vaillant's 2005 book, The Golden Spruce. However, her most significant work is the untitled series of blankets showcased here. Wilson envisioned these pieces as public art, meant to be seen and understood by many. The volume includes essays by Robert Kardosh and Robin Laurence, alongside Wilson's own texts that provide historical and personal context for her imagery. Personal recollections from Wilson's daughter Kūn Jaad Dana Simeon, her brother Allan Wilson, and Haida curator and artist Nika Collison further enrich the narrative, honoring the remarkable achievements of an artist whose vision will sustain Haida knowledge for generations."
