During the American War of Independence, Mr. Wharton, together with his two daughters Sarah and Frances and his son Henry, got between the fronts of the continental army commanded by George Washington and the British. The appearance of a stranger named Mr. Harper and a dubious peddler drag the family further into the mire of war.
