The author provides Maria's cooking recipes and in doing so the reader gets to know the response from the people who ate her food. She was a mother, a wife, and a wonderful human being. She left behind an unprofaned inheritance of cooking recipes which in her lifetime she passed on to others. Her son, the author, provides an insight into the culture of his upbringing through her cooking. In this novel the audience can obtain her cooking recipes to be able to cook the way she did. Her love as a housewife, a mother and feeding people with her food fulfilled heart-warming memories to those who knew her. The reading provides a legacy through the cooking hands of a woman who took pride in serving and taking care of others. Those who knew her and ate her food called her, "Mami," or "Mommy."
