Williams S. Aaron

A Life Unimagined: The Rewards of Mission-Driven Service in the Peace Corps and Beyond
    • Aaron Williams has dedicated his life to public service and improving the lives of others, offering insights into the interplay of international development and US foreign policy, as well as the American belief in achieving success through hard work and determination. His remarkable journey began on Chicago's South Side, where he attended Catholic schools, engaged with the Boys Club and Boy Scouts, and immersed himself in science fiction at the Chicago Public Library. After graduating from Chicago State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, he served as a public school teacher and later as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Dominican Republic, an experience he found transformative. This led him to the US Agency for International Development (USAID), where he worked on projects in Honduras, Haiti, and South America, eventually becoming a career minister in the Foreign Service. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed him director of the Peace Corps, a position he held until 2012. In his memoir, Williams reflects on valuable life lessons, emphasizing that success often stems from failure, the necessity of taking risks, the importance of trusting one’s intuition in key decisions, and the realization that what you seek may not always align with what truly matters in life.
