Der Übersetzer und Schriftsteller Alexander Eliasberg (1879 – 1924) verließ Russland 1905 und übersiedelte nach Deutschland. Bekannt wurde er durch seine kongenialen Übersetzungen russischer Klassiker, daneben engagierte er sich aber auch für die jüdisch-polnische Erzähltradition. Der vorliegende Band enthält Sagen und märchenhafte Erzählungen aus dem Umfeld des Chassidismus. Reprint der 1916 in München erschienenen Erstausgabe.
In the final years of his life, Chekhov had reached the height of his powers as a dramatist, and also produced some of the stories that rank among his masterpieces. The poignant �The Lady with the Little Dog� and �About Love� examine the nature of love outside of marriage � its romantic idealism and the fear of disillusionment. La produzione di Gogol' è caratterizzata da un alternarsi di scritti moralistici e di opere narrative, frutto del suo genio fantastico e della sua irripetibile personalità. Di queste fanno parte i racconti del ciclo pietroburghese, nei quali la capitale - che all'ucraino Gogol' appare come una città non russa, splendida facciata di un edificio ormai in rovina dove si coduce una vita vuota, esteriore, alienata - si fa al tempo stesso scenario grottesco e sinistro burattinaio di quella "vita vegetativa" verso la quale lo scrittore si sentì sempre attirato, in un duplice atteggiamento di compiacimento partecipe e di beffarda ironia.
