Tutte le scuole di pensiero cinesi considerano l'I Chig la più antica testimonianza della letteratura cinese. In un antico testo si legge che il magistrato incaricato della sovrintendenza alle pratiche divinatorie aveva il controllo delle regole fissate in tre libri chiamati Dei Mutamenti. Mentre dei primi due non è rimasta traccia, il terzo è giunto fino a noi come il Libro dei Mutamenti, o I Ching. Il testo è evidente opera di diversi autori e il suo nucleo originale è costituito da 64 esagrammi disegnati con tratti continui e tratti spezzati.
