In May 1968, Linda McCartney became the first female photographer to have her work on the cover of Rolling Stone. During her tenure as the leading photographer of the late 1960s musical scene, she captured many of rock's most important musicians on film, including Aretha Franklin, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, The Doors, and the Grateful Dead. In 1967, Linda met Paul McCartney at London's Bag O' Nails club and subsequently photographed The Beatles during an album launch event. Paul and Linda were married on March 12, 1969. For the next three decades, until her untimely death, she devoted herself to her family, vegetarianism, animal rights, and photography. From her early rock portraits through raising four children with Paul, Linda captured her whole world on film, from spontaneous family pictures to studio sessions. Always unassuming and fresh, her work displays a warmth and feeling that captures the essence of any subject. Whether photographing her children, celebrities, animals, or a fleeting moment of everyday life,1 she did so without pretension or artifice. This retrospective volume--selected from her archive of over 200,000 images--was produced in close collaboration with Paul and their children.--From publisher description.

The latter half of the twentieth century witnessed British artists, architects, and designers rising to prominence globally. In the post-war reconstruction era, youth began to challenge established artistic norms, drawing inspiration from popular culture. This iconoclasm, rooted in the Pop movement, remains a vital aspect of British art. The book provides a year-by-year account, juxtaposing emerging talents with established figures, highlighting connections and contradictions across various visual disciplines, including architecture, interior design, and graphic art. Through images and text, it delves into the factors shaping British art's unique character, such as the distinctive art school teaching system, fashion, pop music, and political influences. Artists' responses to these elements have consistently been original and thought-provoking, paving the way for future innovation. Organized by decade, the book showcases achievements accompanied by insights from notable artists, designers, collectors, and critics who have significantly impacted each era. The creative landscape has thrived on encouragement, challenge, and opposition, enabling talents to transcend shifting tastes. Featuring over 250 artists, including Henry Moore, David Hockney, and Damien Hirst, this publication also commemorates the first fifty years of Thames and Hudson, founded by Walter Neurath in 1949, and its role in public education and arts support.

In Camera - Francis Bacon

A lavishly illustrated look at the sources behind the paintings of Francis Bacon. Francis Bacon famously found inspiration in photographs, film stills, and images from the media. In this new, updated edition of In Camera, Martin Harrison reveals how these sources informed some of Bacon’s most important paintings and triggered decisive turning points in the artist’s stylistic development. Key influences—including the masters Diego Velázquez, Nicolas Poussin, and Auguste Rodin; the photographer Eadweard Muybridge; and the film director Sergei Eisenstein—are given close consideration. Bacon’s work is examined in relation to the precedents set by other artists who made use of mechanical reproductions, including Pablo Picasso and Walter Sickert, and in the context of his contemporaries Lucian Freud, Mark Rothko, Graham Sutherland, and Patrick Heron. With over 270 color illustrations, including valuable source images and documents, In Camera is a bravura accomplishment of original research, addressing important questions about Bacon’s painting practice and shedding fresh light on his life and work.

For over fifty years, Norman Parkinson was a prominent figure in fashion and portrait photography, gaining recognition in Europe and America. This retrospective, edited by Martin Harrison with the support of Parkinson's estate, seeks to reassess his impact on twentieth-century culture. Parkinson began his career in the 1930s Modernist movement, pioneering fashion photography with dynamic images for *Harper's Bazaar*. In 1939, he joined *Vogue*, capturing the war years from his English countryside farm. His first trip to New York in 1949 marked the start of his international travels and a more cosmopolitan photographic style in the 1950s. By the early 1960s, as he approached fifty, his vibrant interpretation of the London scene for *Queen* contrasted sharply with his contemporaries like Batley, Avedon, and Newton. He continued contributing to *Vogue* until 1978, when a shift to *Town & Country* in the US revitalized his career, bolstered by his celebrated portraits of notable figures, including the Royal Family. This book selectively showcases photographs of distinct quality, both familiar and lesser-known, contextualizing his work within the historical and photographic landscape of each era. Harrison, who collaborated with Parkinson and his peers in the 1960s, utilizes extensive archives to offer this critical evaluation.
