      Con la bolla «Summis desiderantes affectibus», promulgata il 5 dicembre 1484, papa Innocenzo VIII autorizza i domenicani Heinrich Kramer (Institor) e Jakob Sprenger a ricercare e quindi «punire, incarcerare, correggere» le persone resesi colpevoli di stregoneria. Nell'inverno del 1486-87 i due inquisitori danno alle stampe Il martello delle streghe (Malleus maleficarum) che spiega le ragioni teoriche e le procedure da adottare nella caccia alle streghe. Il successo è enorme (trentaquattro edizioni e oltre trentacinquemila copie stampate). «La massima delle eresie è non credere alla stregoneria» e gli autori, per onorare compiutamente il titolo dell'opera, demoliscono a colpi di maglio tutte le opinioni contrarie reinterpretando a loro beneficio i testi canonici e i brani biblici e scagliandosi contro le donne che si lasciano sedurre dal diavolo e con lui si accoppiano. Nell'opera le questioni sessuali vengono a costituire l'argomento centrale cosicché quello che avrebbe dovuto essere un trattato teologico si trasforma pian piano in un delirio sessuofobico. Il Malleus maleficarum, con la duplice autorizzazione del pontefice e dell'imperatore Massimiliano I d'Austria, consentì il massacro di un numero incredibile di donne.
