Dopo aver lavorato come custode di zoo, lavapiatti in Antartide, interior designer e insegnante d'arte, nel 1998 è diventato un illustratore a tempo pieno. David è laureato al Christchurch College of Education e ha conseguito un Diploma di Belle Arti presso l'Università di Canterbury.
