Il humanista e statista inglese Thomas Morus (1478-1535) scrisse la sua opera fondamentale nel 1515/16 a Bruges durante le sue trattative con i mercanti fiamminghi. L'opera di Morus contrasta due mondi. Nel primo parte, attraverso un dialogo, vengono messe in luce le ombre dell'Inghilterra contemporanea, dove la proprietà privata è vista come la radice dell'arroganza e di tutti i mali, che spacca la società in classi: nobiltà e alto clero accumulano ricchezze sfruttando la popolazione lavoratrice. In risposta alla domanda su come possa funzionare una società in cui alcuni si basano sul lavoro degli altri, il narratore Raphael Hythlodeus, un "sognatore" viaggiatore, invita a visitare l'isola di Utopia, dove ha vissuto a lungo. Anche se il sogno di una comunità ideale è svanito, possiamo lasciarci ispirare da Morus per concepire un modello di società globale che viva in pace, protetta dal diritto.
