Con Colin Dexter, a detta dei critici, siamo ai piani alti dell’arte del poliziesco. Uno scrittore di timbro classico, da paragonare a Ruth Rendell e P. D. James. L’ambientazione è tipicamente inglese: l’Inghilterra da cartolina, dei pub e dei sobborghi verdi, cui però si aggiunge subito il graffio della violenza e delle sordide passioni. Limpida è la razionalità del puzzle, privo di effetti appariscenti e senza l’eccitante dell’azione a tutti i costi: ma l’enigma dell’intreccio non è mai creato grazie alla trovata cervellotica, semmai sono le sorprese che riserva la vita quotidiana a rimescolare e confondere. E l’umanità dei personaggi, così come il retroterra culturale che sostiene ogni pagina, affiora soprattutto nell’ininterrotto filo di ironia, a volte amara, a tratti malinconica, perfino ammiccante con i lettori alle spalle dei protagonisti della narrazione. Insomma nei romanzi di Colin Dexter scopriamo una prova, tra le più interessanti e riuscite, di rinnovamento del giallo inglese tradizionale. L’ispettore E. Morse e il suo aiuto, il sergente Lewis, sono in L’ultima corsa per Woodstock al loro esordio da protagonisti della serie che comprende più di dieci casi. Si sono presi subito, quando Morse ha chiesto al subalterno: «Crede che stia perdendo tempo?» e Lewis ha risposto senza affanno: «Sì signore». Il sergente ha appreso presto a concepire come utili all’inchiesta i cruciverba del superiore, la passione per Wagner, i sarcasmi fuori luogo, il bere, la solitudine. L’occhio scrutatore di Morse, infatti, sembra sempre rivolto verso l’interno, dentro lui stesso mentre guarda la vita degli altri scivolare in cupi drammi. All’inizio, la bella Sylvia Kaye, scomparsa alla fermata per Woodstock, ritrovata ore dopo uccisa in modo brutale nel pub a nord di Oxford, era sembrata l’interprete di una tragedia di ordinario orrore. L’inchiesta s’era avviata agevolmente. Tanto che «Morse si era sentito fiducioso nelle proprie capacità, come uno studente che, alle prese con un insidioso problema di matematica, in segreto si tenga accanto il libro delle risposte». Presto però una ragazza cocciuta e intelligente aveva aperto le prime crepe nel castello di sabbia dell’investigatore. E non era stato l’unico contrattempo. Una serie esasperante di trabocchetti, false piste, colpi di scena, convinceva Morse che, forse, «il libro delle risposte conteneva un errore».
