In the 1880s, the farming communities around Fellburn faced financial struggles. Hector Stewart, two years after his wife's death, announced his intention to marry Moira Conelly, a distant relative he claimed was wealthy and lived in a castle in Ireland. Pattie, the rebellious daughter, had already left to marry, while Daniel, forced to work on the farm instead of pursuing university, felt trapped. However, a family tragedy would eventually provide him with an opportunity to seek love and happiness he once thought impossible.
