King Alfred's Version of the Consolations of Boethius: Done Into Modern English, With an Introduction

Maggiori informazioni sul libro

The book has been a vital companion for scholars from the Middle Ages to the sixteenth century, influencing many during its time. It has been translated into every European language and into English nearly a dozen times, with notable translations from King Alfred to Lord Preston and others in the eighteenth century. The enduring appeal of this work inspires this new translation. Boethius's masterpiece, featuring a blend of prose and verse akin to Greek drama, stands out in literature and carries poignant significance due to its historical context. Those who read the original will find great value, and a new English translation is warranted after nearly a century. Some editions include a bust claimed to depict Boethius, but its authenticity is questionable. The Hope Collection at Oxford offers a different portrait, lacking authoritative backing. For the frontispiece, I chose a reproduction from a plaster cast in the Ashmolean Museum, representing Boethius's father, Narius Manlius Boethius. This rare portrait captures the consular attire and insignia of the era, showcasing the decline of contemporary art. The consul is depicted in a richly embroidered cloak, holding a staff with a Roman eagle and a napkin for starting circus races, surrounded by symbols of victory. Thanks are extended to the Ashmolean Museum and Mr. T.W. Jackson for their assistance.
