Tintin discovers a lost briefcase belonging to Professor Hector Alembick, a sigilographer, and learns about his collection of seals, including one from Syldavian King Ottokar IV. Tintin soon realizes they are being watched, and after a bombing attempt on his flat, he suspects a Syldavian connection. He decides to accompany Alembick to Syldavia for research, but begins to doubt his companion's identity when he notices inconsistencies. During a layover, Tintin tests Alembick's beard, suspecting it might be fake, but ultimately drops the matter. While flying to Syldavia, Tintin is ejected from the plane and lands in a haywagon, where he suspects a plot to steal the sceptre of King Ottokar IV, essential for the King's rule during the St. Vladimir's Day parade. In Syldavia, Tintin warns King Muskar XII about the conspiracy. They find Alembick and others unconscious, with the sceptre missing. Tintin deduces that Alembick used a disguised spring cannon to launch the sceptre into the forest. He follows the thieves to the border, retrieves the sceptre, and uncovers documents revealing a plot by Borduria to take over Syldavia. Tintin steals a Bordurian aircraft to return the sceptre but is shot down by Syldavian forces. He arrives on foot just as rumors of the theft incite riots against Bordurian businesses. Snowy brings the sceptre back, and Tintin presents the incriminating documents to the King, leading to arrests and military mobil
